Substrate Preparation

The substrate must be well cured, mechanically and dimensionally stable, strong, clean, dry and free from flaking parts, laitance, grease, oil, paint, wax, corrosion deposits, dust, loose materials, etc. It should be ensured that tiles are dry, and free of contaminants that could otherwise impair adhesion. Concrete, screeds, renders, and blockwork should be cured sufficiently that all shrinkage movement has occurred.

Minimum age of the substrate (In mild weather):

  • Renders must have cured at least 1 week for each centimeter of thickness.
  • FloorPro Rapid Screed (rapid setting cementitious semi- dry screed) must have cured at least 3 days.
  • FloorPro Easy Screed (normal cementitious semi-dry screed) must have cured at least 28 days.

Note: The screed drying time is subject to the screed thickness and site conditions.

Priming:

The prepared substrate should be thoroughly soaked, to a saturated but surface dry condition prior to application of the TilePro Fix, few hours ago, before applying the mix to minimize absorption. Any residual surface water should be removed prior to commencement.

Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds must be perfectly dry, sufficiently hard and free of dust. It is absolutely essential that very absorbent cement-based substrates, plasterboards, cement boards, calcium silicate boards, aerated concrete and anhydrite screeds are prime with BondPro Penetrating Primer. For tile-on-tile applications, prime the existing tiles with BondPro Grip Primer. Areas subject to high moisture content should be primed with FloorPro Primer MT.

Product Preparation

Add 4.75 to liters of clean water in the mixing bucket. Add full bag of TilePro Fix powder slowly and mix continuously for approximately 3-5 minutes until a smooth, creamy and lump free consistency is achieved. Add water, if necessary, within the limits given (maximum 5 liters / bag), until the required consistency is achieved. Mix for a further 1-2 minutes. The amount of water required will be affected by ambient temperature and relative humidity.

Product Application

TilePro Fix is applied with a notched trowel onto the substrate. To obtain good adhesion to the substrate the following system is recommended: first apply a thin coat of TilePro Fix using the smooth side of the trowel and immediately afterwards apply the desired thickness using the toothed side of the trowel on to a smooth surface (trowel @ 45°)

Installation of the tiles:

It is not necessary to wet the tiles before installation; only in the case of very dusty backs washing is recommended, by quickly immersing them in clean water. The tiles must be installed in the normal way, placing them firmly to ensure good contact with the adhesive. Unfavorable environmental conditions (strong sunlight, drying wind, high temperature as well as a highly absorbent substrate), could drastically reduce open time.

Spread the adhesive onto the substrate using a suitable notched trowel between 2 to 5mm by trowel to either the tile or the substrate faces or a single face as per the work method employed. With the help of notched trowel, remove excess material prior placing the tiles. Fix the tiles in place & tap gently with wooden hammer. Gently remove excess mixture from the tiles.

Joints:

Movement joints should be provided in accordance with normal practice. It is recommended that when fixing ceramic tiles, a minimum spacing of 2mm be left around each tile. Ceramic tiles should never be butt jointed. Adjustments to tiles should only be made during the adhesives open time.

Grouting & Sealing:

Joint grouting with TilePro Grout (cementitious tile grout) may be commenced 24 hours after tiles have been laid. Wall joints between the ceramic tiles can be grouted after 4-8 hours and floor joints can be grouted after 24 hours with the specific TilePro cementitious or epoxy grouts, available in different

  • Joint width from 1 to 8 mm: TilePro Grout
  • Joint width from 1 to 10 mm: TilePro EP Grout

Movement joints, corner joints (floor/wall) and connection joints (fixtures/tiles, wood/tiles) may be sealed with the elastic silicone joint sealant from SealPro range.

Cleaning:

Tools, equipment and mixers with clean water immediately after use (before hardening). Cured material can only be removed by mechanical means. Similarly, joints must be raked out in readiness for grouting.

Finishing:

Remove excess adhesive with a damp cloth before material has set.

Protection:

Protect floors from foot traffic for at least 72 hours after installation. Stepping boards may be used after 24 hours when occasional stepping on the floor is unavoidable.

Others
  • Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, and in direct sunlight.
  • In hot weather use cold water to bring the mixed material temperature to <30°C.
  • In cold weather use warm water to raise the mixed material temperature to >10°C.
  • Do not add water or fresh mortar to material which has begun to set. Just remix again for 1-2 minutes.
  • Do not proceed with the application when rainfall is imminent unless in a sheltered or protected situation.
  • Only full bags of the product shall be mixed by
