Description

AquaShieldPro CW 21 is a two-component acrylic modified cementitious coating consisting of a powder that is a blend of Portland cement, selected silica sands, and modifying agents. When mixed to a slurry consistency with AquaShieldPro CW 21 liquid, an acrylic polymer emulsion, it can be easily applied by brush, roller, or trowel. It cures to give a waterproof, elastomeric hard wearing, flexible membrane providing an effective barrier to water-borne salts and atmospheric gases and resurfacing concrete, masonry, and most other construction materials.

AquaShieldPro Smart CW 21 has excellent bonding properties to all concrete, masonry, ceramic, and marble surfaces, as long as they are sound and sufficiently clean. It must be reinforced with mesh across all construction joints and cracks. The reinforcing mesh may be 100% virgin polypropylene.

Substrate Preparation

The substrates must be sound, clean, dust free, and free from all traces of oil, grease, curing compound, gypsum, residual paint, corrosion deposits or algae, or laitance which would impair adhesion. Conventional concrete curing compounds should be removed before the application of the product. The exception to this is when BondPro Cure RB, a resin-based curing compound has been used. Cracks, voids, and honeycombs in concrete surfaces must be repaired with suitable repair products from the RepairPro product range.

All the patched areas to cure before applying the membrane. Clean surface by blast cleaning, high-pressure water jetting (400 bar), wire brushing, grinding, etc. in order to remove all previous coatings, any traces of grease, rust, release agents, cement laitance, and any other material which could reduce adhesion. All dust deposits from preparation must be removed by vacuum. The surface must be adequately dampened before application.

Product Preparation

The product is supplied in pre-measured units and should be mixed in clean containers. Slowly add the powder to the liquid and mix, using a slow-speed drill fitted with a suitable paddle until a uniform and lump-free consistency is achieved allow to stand for 5 minutes and re-mix, the paste is then ready to use. Do not mix more material than can be used in one hour. Do not prepare the mix by hand.

NOTE: Although the product is supplied in pre-measured packs, part packs can be used by mixing 2 volumes of powder with 1 volume of liquid. Mix thoroughly and keep mixed during application

Product Application

Saturate concrete surfaces with clean water whilst still visibly damp, but free of standing water, apply, using a short, stiff bristle brush or roller. Trowel application can be undertaken as necessary. For heavy 6-10 mm depressions, honeycombs, etc. use less gauging liquid and mix to the desired consistency. The first coat should be applied at a minimum thickness of 1mm (approximate coverage is 1.6kg/m²) and should be well brushed into the surface. Application may also be made by roller; however, it is recommended to finish the surface with a trowel for best results. It is recommended, for general resurfacing, that each coat should be a minimum of 1 mm thick. Wait until the first layer is dry before applying subsequent layers. Pre-dampening of the surface is not necessary when applying the second coat. The application shall cover the whole surface of the substrate in a uniform thickness.

Apply AquaSieldPro CW 21 by:

  • spatula/roller: Exerting good and even pressure onto the substrate.
  • brush: In 2 directions (diagonally opposite/crosswise).
  • mechanical spray: recommended for large areas

Curing and Protection:

In order to protect AquaShieldPro CW 21 against any damage caused by e.g backfilling or traffic, it must be protected using either a cementitious screed or protection boards. A separation sheet can be laid under the protection layer if necessary, to avoid any bonding to the membrane.

Tiling or finished flooring installations should be carried out as soon as possible after a full cure of the membrane is established. Under hot or excessive drying conditions adequate protective shielding should be foreseen.

In cold, humid, or unventilated areas it may be necessary to leave the application for a longer curing period. AquaShieldPro CW 21 needs to cure under dry-air conditions. Additional heating and/or ventilation can assist in proper curing. NEVER use dehumidifiers during curing periods.

Others
  • Protect from the rain at least 24-48 hours after application
  • Avoid application in direct sunlight and when rain is imminent or in strong winds, unless in a sheltered or protected situation.
  • Avoid direct contact with chlorinated water i.e., in swimming pools, by using suitable protection (e.g. tiles). If a solvent-based paint is to be applied on top, carry out preliminary testing in order to ensure that the solvents do not attack and damage the waterproofing layer
  • When used in contact with drinking water, ensure AquaSieldPro CW 21 and all associated North products comply with local regulations and specifications of drinking water
  • Setting time can be influenced by high relative humidity, particularly in basements or closed rooms. The use of adequate ventilation is recommended.
  • The substrate moisture content must be ≤ 5% moisture content, with no rising moisture
  • Do not add cement sand or any other additives which may affect its properties.
  • Do not add water or fresh mortar to the material that has begun to set. Just remix again for 1-2 minutes.
  • The product should not be exposed to moving water during the application or prior to the initial set.
  • Mix only sufficient material by mechanical means that can be applied using available labor and equipment to ensure a continuous and uninterrupted application.
