Description

AquaShieldPro CW 1K is a one-component crack bridging, fiber-reinforced cementitious mortar for flexible waterproofing and concrete protection. It is applied by brush or trowel and is suitable for use in tropical and hot climatic conditions. It cures to give a waterproof, elastomeric hard wearing, flexible membrane providing an effective barrier to water-borne salts and atmospheric gases and resurfacing concrete, masonry, and most other construction materials.

AquaShieldPro CW 1K has excellent bonding properties to all concrete, masonry, ceramic, and marble surfaces, as long as they are sound and sufficiently clean. It must be reinforced with mesh across all construction joints and cracks. The reinforcing mesh may be 100% virgin polypropylene.

Additional Information

Typical Applications

  • Suitable for internal and external use, against positive and negative water pressure.
  • For walls & floors
  • Waterproofing of bathrooms, showers, foundation walls, terraces, balconies, and swimming pools before the application of tiles bonded with adhesives
  • As a vapor barrier, Damp proofing for facades.
  • As a waterproof coating behind tiles and stone to prevent staining
  • Waterproofing of external concrete wall surfaces to be backfilled in ground
  • Inside waterproofing of negative water pressure up to 1 bar of walls and floors in basements
  • Flexible waterproofing and protection of reinforced concrete structures against the effects of freeze-thaw and carbon dioxide attack to improve durability including tanks with drinking water, basins, pipes, etc
  • As a waterproof and protective coating for concrete structures, renders, cementitious screeds

Benefits

  • Breathable - whilst repelling water, allows the substrate to breathe
  • Approved for use in contact with potable water
  • Easily applied by brush, roller, trowel, or airless spray
  • Retains flexibility when submerged and freeze-thaw resistant
  • Withstands occasional foot traffic
  • Good sag resistance and easy to apply, even on vertical surfaces
  • Even if the membrane gets mechanically damaged, it can be easily repaired locally within minutes.
  • Outstanding wear and weather resistance and good resistance to seawater, sodium hydroxide, calcium chloride, and de-icing salts.
  • Good resistance to mild acids
  • Excellent adhesion. Bonds to porous and non-porous surfaces
  • Environmentally friendly.
  • Long working life
  • Suitable for light pedestrian traffic
  • Unlike conventional coatings which require a 7–28-day cure of concrete, AquaShieldPro CW 1K can be applied to 24-hour-old concrete thereby giving immediate protection
  • Low odor, allowing installation in occupied buildings
  • Extremely low permeability - gives excellent resistance to attack by aggressive elements
  • Single component product – only water needs to be added, easy to use

Substrate Preparation

The substrates must be sound, clean, dust free, and free from all traces of oil, grease, curing compound, gypsum, residual paint, corrosion deposits or algae, or laitance which would impair adhesion. Conventional concrete curing compounds should be removed before the application of the product. The exception to this is when BondPro Cure RB, a resin-based curing compound has been used. Cracks, voids, and honeycombs in concrete surfaces must be repaired with suitable repair products from RepairPro product range.

All the patched areas to cure before applying the membrane. Clean surface by blast cleaning, high-pressure water jetting (400 bar), wire brushing, grinding, etc. in order to remove all previous coatings, any traces of grease, rust, release agents, cement laitance, and any other material which could reduce adhesion. All dust deposits from preparation must be removed by vacuum. The surface must be adequately dampened before application.

Product Preparation

The product can be mixed with a low-speed (300-500 rpm) hand drill mixer, adding the right quantity of water according to the respective application. Once a homogeneous mix is obtained, continue mixing for 3–4 min. The mortar must be homogeneous and lump-free. Do not add any additional water or other ingredients. Each bag must be entirely mixed, to avoid faulty particle size distribution of aggregates contained in the powder component.

Product Application

Saturate concrete surfaces with clean water whilst still visibly damp, but free of standing water, apply, using a short, stiff bristle brush or roller. Trowel application can be undertaken as necessary. For heavy 6-10 mm depressions, honeycombs, etc. use less gauging liquid and mix to the desired consistency. The first coat should be applied at a minimum thickness of 1mm (approximate coverage is 1.6kg/m²) and should be well brushed into the surface. Application may also be made by roller; however, it is recommended to finish the surface with a trowel for best results. It is recommended, for general resurfacing, that each coat should be a minimum of 1 mm thick. Wait until the first layer is dry before applying subsequent layers. Pre-dampening of the surface is not necessary when applying the second coat. The application shall cover the whole surface of the substrate in a uniform thickness.

Apply AquaShieldPro CW 1K by:

  • spatula/roller: Exerting good and even pressure onto the substrate.

  • brush: In 2 directions (diagonally opposite/crosswise).

  • mechanical spray: recommended for large areas

Others
  • Protect from the rain at least 24-48 hours after application
  • Avoid application in direct sunlight and when rain is imminent or in strong winds, unless in a sheltered or protected situation.
  • If a solvent-based paint is to be applied on top, carry out preliminary testing in order to ensure that the solvents do not attack and damage the waterproofing layer
  • When used in contact with drinking water, ensure AquaSieldPro CW 1K and all associated North products comply with local regulations and specifications of drinking water
  • Setting time can be influenced by high relative humidity, particularly in basements or closed rooms. The use of adequate ventilation is recommended.
  • The substrate moisture content must be ≤ 5% moisture content, with no rising moisture
  • Do not add cement sand or any other additives which may affect its properties.
  • Do not add water or fresh mortar to the material that has begun to set. Just remix again for 1-2 minutes.
  • The product should not be exposed to moving water during the application or prior to the initial set.
  • Mix only sufficient material by mechanical means that can be applied using available labor and equipment to ensure a continuous and uninterrupted application.
